eCommerce entrepreneurs understand actual effort is required.
eCommerce is a real business. Amazon, eBay and Walmart sellers get this because they know that ecommerce isn’t just an online store that you can open up and forget about.
eCommerce is difficult to understand if the only experience you have with it comes from selling on Amazon using Amazon FBA (Fulfillment by Amazon). Amazon FBA is not at all like traditional ecommerce which started back in the late 90’s and required you to maintain your own warehouses and customer service.
Amazon FBA’s operations exist within Amazon’s existing inventory management system and warehouses, which Amazon controls and operate behind the scenes for their own benefit, not yours. You control your own inventory in ecommerce when you sell on platforms other than Amazon . It takes time to learn how to manage your products in these other markets without relying too much on automated tools or services.
While Amazon FBA sellers may make more money than those who don’t use Amazon FBA, it’s important to understand the Amazon business model and how it differs from other ecommerce platforms. Amazon is not your friend, they are a business and will do whatever they can to benefit themselves at the expense of their sellers.
eBay and Walmart are much more like traditional ecommerce platforms where you have more control over your own store, inventory and pricing. eBay and Walmart both have years of experience in running these types of stores and they are much more forgiving if you make a mistake.
If you’re looking to start an ecommerce business, it’s important to do your research and find the platform that is best for you. Amazon FBA may be the best option for some sellers, but others may find a better home on eBay, Etsy, Wayfair or Walmart. It’s important to understand the business you are getting into before jumping in head first. eCommerce is a real business and it’s not as easy as it looks!
